Comparative-typological analysis of the concept "loneliness" in English and Uzbek lexicographical sources

Abstract

This article presents a comparative-typological analysis of the concept of “loneliness” in English and Uzbek lexicographical sources. The research material consists of lexical units in English and Uzbek explanatory dictionaries that are semantically related to loneliness. Their meanings are examined through componential-semantic analysis, focusing on such features as being alone, separation from others, social contacts and emotional evaluation. The study employs lexicographical, componential-semantic and comparative-typological methods to identify common and distinctive features in the semantic structure of the concept. The findings demonstrate that English and Uzbek share a semantic basis in representing the state of being alone, while some semantic components differ in their degree of expression and interaction. In English, emotional and psychological aspects are differentiated through separate lexical units, whereas Uzbek also reflects social and national-cultural dimensions. The study establishes that semantically related lexical units are not always complete equivalents across the languages. The results reveal similarities and differences in the semantic structure and representation of the concept.
