Developing reflective and methodological competence in English language teacher education

Abstract

This article examines the theoretical and practical foundations for developing reflective and methodological competence in English language teacher education. Reflective competence is interpreted as the teacher’s capacity to analyse pedagogical decisions, classroom processes, learner responses, and learning outcomes on the basis of evidence and to use this analysis for subsequent improvement. Methodological competence encompasses professional knowledge and skills related to setting learning objectives, lesson design, selecting and adapting methods and materials, organizing assessment and feedback, and making context-sensitive pedagogical decisions. Drawing on the work of Dewey, Schön, Shulman, Borg, Korthagen and Vasalos, Richards and Farrell, Larrivee, Burns, and Farrell, the article conceptualizes reflection as a professional mechanism that strengthens methodological reasoning. Practical strategies discussed include reflective journals, post-lesson analysis, peer observation, microteaching, video-based reflection, critical incident analysis, portfolios, and action research. These practices help teachers move beyond descriptive accounts of what happened toward analytical and critical consideration of why particular methodological choices were made, how they influenced learners, and what should be changed in future teaching. The article argues that systematic reflection connects theory and practice, supports evidence-informed decision-making, and transforms methodological competence from a static body of knowledge into a continuously developing professional capacity.
