Translation issues of wedding-related phraseological units and the degree of equivalence

Abstract

The article examines the translation issues of wedding-related phraseological units and their degree of equivalence from linguocultural and translation-studies perspectives. The study describes how English and French wedding-related expressions are rendered into Uzbek, considering their semantic, connotative, and culturally bound features. Alongside analytical-descriptive and comparative-semantic methods, the analysis employs R. Brislin’s back-translation method. The Uzbek counterparts of “black-sheep brother”, “a huge financial burden”, and “Se faire passer la corde au cou” are systematized, and their degree of equivalence is presented in tables. The findings show that literal translation of wedding phraseology often causes a loss of cultural connotations, whereas selecting equivalents conforming to target-language norms ensures translation naturalness and adequacy. Where lacunae exist, expressions are analytically explained to reveal their national-cultural basis. The role of context and stylistic requirements in choosing equivalents is also highlighted. The results can be applied in translation studies, phraseology, and linguoculturology.
