Linguopsychological Foundations of the Expression of Mental States in English and Uzbek

Abstract

This article examines the linguistic and psychological foundations of expressing mental states in English and Uzbek. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between speech production, cognitive and psychological processes, individual experience, subjective perception, and communicative intention. Speech production is viewed as a dynamic process involving the perception and interpretation of external or internal stimuli, the formation of meaning, the selection of linguistic units, and their realization within a specific communicative context. Literary discourse is considered an important source for analyzing the development, awareness, and verbal representation of psychological experiences because it allows inner states to be represented through dialogue, narration, metaphor, physical reactions, and character behavior. Based on examples from Uzbek and English literary texts, the study identifies several linguo-psychological mechanisms of mental-state representation, including direct naming, physiological reaction, behavioral expression, memory activation, spatial association, verbal address, inner speech, repetition, metaphorical and symbolic expression, internal resistance, and silence. The analysis demonstrates that the representation of mental states is shaped by the interaction of language, cognition, individual experience, subjective attitudes, and communicative context. The findings highlight the importance of a contextual approach to the interpretation of psychological meanings in literary discourse.
