Abstract
This article presents a comparative study of the semantic gradation and stylistic differentiation of verbs denoting smiling in English and Uzbek. The study aims to identify the common and distinctive semantic features of these verbs and to examine their degrees of intensity, connotative meanings, and stylistic characteristics in different communicative contexts. Componential, lexical-semantic, contextual, and comparative methods are employed in the research. The denotative and connotative meanings of the English verbs smile, grin, beam, smirk, and sneer, as well as the Uzbek verbs tabassum qilmoq, jilmaymoq, kulimsiramoq, irjaymoq, and tirjaymoq, are analyzed. The findings reveal that the degree of facial expression does not always correspond to the emotional and evaluative meanings of these verbs. While some verbs convey sincerity and friendliness, others express irony, contempt, or negative attitudes. The study demonstrates that semantic gradation and stylistic differentiation, although interconnected, are based on distinct linguistic criteria. Particular attention is paid to contextual variations in evaluative meaning. The findings contribute to understanding cross-linguistic similarities and differences and provide a theoretical basis for translation studies and further comparative linguistic research.
