Strategy in teaching language refers to the overall approach or plan that a teacher uses to help students learn a language effectively. It encompasses the various techniques, methods, and resources that the teacher employs to achieve specific learning goals.

Teaching strategies refer to the methods, techniques, procedures and processes that a teacher uses during instruction. It is generally recognised that teaching strategies are multidimensional and their effectiveness depends on the context in which they are applied. There is no single strategy that can guarantee better student outcomes, however, research has highlighted a number of practices that enable learning among students (Hattie, 2009; Marzano et al., 2001; Wayne and Young, 2003).

The effect of these strategies is influenced by how the teacher adapts and applies the right strategy to deal with the target group and help students learn the desired course content and achieve the intended learning outcomes. The intended learning outcomes should guide which approach best suits the achievement of those outcomes.

Common language teaching strategies in EFL include:

  • Communicative Language Teaching (CLT): This approach emphasizes the use of language for communication in real-world situations.
  • Grammar-Translation Method: This method focuses on grammar rules and translation exercises.
  • Audio-lingual Method: This method emphasizes oral practice and repetition of language patterns.
  • Total Physical Response (TPR): This method uses physical actions to teach language meaning.
  • Natural Approach: This method emphasizes language acquisition through immersion and exposure.

Speaking is a complex skill that involves not only the production of sounds but also the ability to convey meaning effectively. Effective teaching of speaking skills is essential for language learners to communicate effectively in real-world situations. This article presents a comprehensive guide to implementing effective strategies for teaching speaking, focusing on techniques that promote fluency, accuracy, and confidence.

A supportive learning environment is crucial for fostering students' speaking skills. Teachers should create a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to language learning and encourages students to take risks and experiment with their language. This can be achieved by establishing clear expectations, providing positive reinforcement, and creating a sense of community within the classroom.

Regular practice is essential for developing speaking skills. Teachers should provide students with ample opportunities to practice speaking in a variety of contexts. This can include pair work, group work, and whole-class discussions. Additionally, teachers can incorporate role-plays, simulations, and presentations to provide students with authentic speaking experiences.

Authentic language materials, such as news articles, songs, and movies, can help students develop their speaking skills by exposing them to real-world language use. Teachers can use these materials to facilitate discussions, debates, and presentations. Additionally, authentic materials can help students learn new vocabulary and grammar structures in a meaningful context.

A variety of speaking activities can help students develop different aspects of their speaking skills. For example, fluency activities can help students speak more quickly and smoothly, while accuracy activities can help them improve their grammar and pronunciation. Teachers can also use activities that focus on specific speaking skills, such as storytelling, describing, and persuading.

Providing constructive feedback is essential for helping students improve their speaking skills. Teachers should offer specific and actionable feedback that focuses on both the strengths and weaknesses of students' performance. Additionally, teachers can use corrective feedback to help students identify and correct errors in their language.

Summing  above mentioned ideas, effective teaching of speaking skills requires a multifaceted approach that incorporates a variety of strategies. By creating a supportive learning environment, providing ample opportunities for practice, incorporating authentic language materials, using a variety of speaking activities, and offering constructive feedback, teachers can help students develop their speaking skills and become confident and effective communicators.
