A Linguacognitive Analysis of the Concept of Time in English Phraseological Units

Abstract

This paper will analyze the presentation of the idea of time in English phraseological units both in literal and metaphorical contexts. The study examines the underlying cognitive patterns and conceptual metaphors using a set of 25 commonly used time-related idioms and expressions, including: buy time, gain time, kill time, time flies, time is money, bide your time, long time no see, once upon a time, and only time will tell. The analysis reveals that English speakers tend to perceive time using four key metaphorical models, including time as a resource (spend time, waste time, time is money), time as something moving (time flies, time after time), time as a measure or spatial dimension (mark time, watch the time), and time as something abstract or experience (only time will tell, time alone will tell). These metaphors show time cognition to be shaped not only by embodied experiences and cultural values but also to be represented in the form of stable and phraseological forms. The work has added to cognitive linguistics and phraseology work by showing the idioms and fixed expressions are sources of shared conceptualizations of time, which are the manifestations of universal cognitive tendencies as well as reflections of English cultural views.
