The Correlation Between Modality and Interjections in Linguistics

Abstract

This article investigates the relationship between modality, a significant semantic-pragmatic category in linguistics, and interjections, which are considered emotional-expressive units. The study analyses the theoretical interpretations of the concept of modality, its epistemic, deontic and dynamic types, and its means of expression, based on the traditions of Western, Russian and Uzbek linguistics. Furthermore, the formation, types, and functional-pragmatic features of the interjection category in speech are elucidated based on scholarly sources. The article, through examples taken from literary texts, examines the realisation of modality and interjections units in speech and their communicative role in enhancing communicative impact is demonstrated. According to the research findings, it is established that interjections, as a means of directly expressing the speaker’s subjective attitude, reinforce or modify the overall modal content of the utterance. Consequently, it is scientifically substantiated that the categories of modality and interjections manifest in interrelated manner based on semantic, pragmatic, and intonational factors.
