Abstract

This article explores the conceptual foundations and methodological approaches to the study of pragmatic competence, which is essential for successful communication in a foreign language. The paper analyzes the theoretical origins of the term “pragmatics” and highlights the importance of pragmatic competence in both linguistic research and foreign language teaching. Emphasis is placed on the role of speech norms, sociocultural factors, and communicative context in shaping pragmatic behavior. The article also reviews various research methods applicable to the study of pragmatic competence and suggests directions for further investigation in this field.
